Seneca Lake is the largest of New York’s eleven Finger Lakes, and the deepest lake entirely within NY State. It’s 37.9 miles long, with a maximum depth of 618 feet. The average width is 1.86 miles and average depth is 291 feet. Seneca is a glacial lake. Underground springs feed the lake at 328,000 gallons per minute, keeping the water a constant 39 degrees year round. The last time Seneca Lake froze over completely was 1912. The constant water temperature creates a microclimate around Seneca, extending the growing season and making it ideal for growing grapes and other fruit.
