Scientists Continue Search to Explain Lake Drums, Mystery Craters

So far, the investigation into the cause of the legendary Seneca Drums has only deepened the mystery.

Seneca Lake, the deepest and widest of the Finger Lakes in Upstate NY, is home to one of the oldest mysteries in America – the Seneca Drums: loud, booming sounds, like distant artillery or beating drums, emanating from the lake and heard by residents for hundreds of years.

Since 1934, the most widely-cited explanation of the Seneca Drums phenomenon is methane gas bubbles leaking through the lake floor, expanding dramatically in size as they rise in the water before exploding on the surface, causing a booming noise heard for miles. However, this gas-bubble-causing-loud-booms action has not been observed or recorded anywhere in the world (except maybe an underwater volcano).

Then in March of 2025, a report from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation sparked the most extensive scientific search ever conducted to find the cause of the legendary Seneca Drums. The search is still ongoing, and to date, has only deepened the mystery.

In 2021, the Seneca Lake Archaeological and Bathymetric Survey Project was launched. Using state of the art underwater equipment, the project aimed to capture images and video of shipwrecks and boats, and to create a detailed topographic map of the lake’s bottom.

In March 2025, the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation released the Seneca Lake Bathymetry Data, the most comprehensive survey of Seneca Lake’s depths ever undertaken. The results confirmed 44 wrecks, but they also found something both unexpected and extraordinary: a field of nearly 70 indentations or “pockmarks,” each roughly 30ft deep and 400ft wide, on the bottom of Seneca Lake.

The researchers suggested that the pockmarks were caused by methane gas or other chemicals seeping through the lake bottom, and plans were announced in summer 2025 to further investigate the field.

Scientists from Cornell and the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse used underwater equipment to collect samples from in and around the pockmarks to see if methane or other chemicals were present, which would support the methane bubble theory of the Seneca Drums. They also placed chloride and conductivity sensors on the lake bed in September 2025, with plans to retrieve those sensors in May 2026.

In November 2025, before the results of the study were announced, Vice.com published a widely-shared article for their millions of followers with the headline “Scientists Finally Solved the Weird Mystery of the Booming New York Lake.” Not only was the headline completely false, the article incorrectly stated that researchers “found traces of methane and other gases” in the pockmarks. To date, Vice has not issued a retraction, and the piece remains on their website.

The actual results of the study were announced in December 2025. No evidence of methane, or for the gas bubble theory of the Seneca Drums, was found. The same levels of methane had been detected both inside and outside the pockmarks. Data further indicated that the methane came from mix of biological and fossil sources.

Researchers have continued to investigate other possible explanations for the Seneca Drums, along with the methane gas hypothesis.

On March 12 2026, it was reported that research was underway to investigate a possible seismic cause for the Seneca Drums. Eight seismic monitoring instruments would be buried about two feet underground around the southern end of Seneca Lake by team of Cornell geoscientists in early 2026. Readings from the seismic sensors and conductivity sensors on the lake bottom will be compared in an attempt to locate the source of the sounds.

On April 3 2026, WENY-TV interviewed researchers from Cornell and SUNY ESF as they gathered deep water samples from Seneca Lake near the pockmark field to be tested for elevated levels of chloride and methane.

The aim of this latest effort, published on April 7, is to figure out if the pockmarks are an active source of chloride (which could explain the lake’s rising chloride levels) or methane (which could explain the Seneca Drums.)

Could the mystery craters of Seneca Lake have been created by something other than methane or chloride leaks?

Back in 2024, while the Seneca Lake Archaeological and Bathymetric Survey Project was nearing its conclusion, the results of a study about a similar but much larger pockmark field off the coast of California were released.

2024 USGS image

The Sur Pockmark Field consists of about 5,200 round circular indentations measuring around 656 feet wide and 16 feet deep. Scientists had long believed the depressions to be caused by methane leaks from the ocean floor.

Utilizing advanced underwater robots, researchers from the The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute studied the field and found no methane, but after examining sediment samples, they proposed a different explanation: sediment gravity flows. This action is “similar to an avalanche of mud, sand, and water moving along the seafloor—that have occurred in this region intermittently for hundreds of thousands of years maintain these seafloor formations.”

E14 Peek-a-boo Diving Corporation, Seneca White Trout and the Legend of Locomotive 13

Listen Here

In this episode, we’ll look at the story of some enterprising young men who back in 1939 built an underwater helmet breathing contraption and brought it to Rock Stream to explore below the waves of Seneca Lake.

Next, we’ll go back to 1947 for the tale of an albino trout that was pulled from Seneca Lake by some local fishermen, two years before the iconic Seneca White Deer were first reported on the grounds of the Seneca Army Depot, and how this anomalous fish was put on display for hundreds of curiosity seekers.

Finally, it’s the legend of Locomotive 13, also known as “Sam Patch,” a 50-ton behemoth with a wild and strange history that began in 1873 with an astounding aerial display in Watkins Glen and ended years later in a Dresden cemetery, Some people believed the train either had a mind of its own or was trying to find religion…or maybe both.

E13 Mystery Craters Revisited, Ancient Stone Faces, Fiery Blob Over Ovid…and Vampires?

Listen Here

In this episode, we revisit the mysterious round craters that were recently discovered at the bottom of Seneca Lake believed to be caused by methane gas seeping through the lakebed. Then, we’ll examine other cases of craters found at the bottom of the ocean, including one that has some striking and distinct similarities with those found at Seneca Lake…although scientists have concluded that site has nothing to do with methane leaks.

Next, we’ll dive into the possibility that an ancient civilization once roamed the Finger Lakes area. We’ll start with one of the most enigmatic prehistoric stoneworks in North America, the Bluff Point Stoneworks on Keuka Lake, and how that site just may be connected to another mysterious spot near Seneca Lake.

Finally, I’ll take you through a bizarre UFO sighting from Ovid, NY back in 1980, which was seen by numerous people and even some strange physical effects on at least one witness.

And yes, believe it or not, I’ll also share an old vampire legend from the west side of Seneca Lake!

E12 July UFO Reports, Seneca Pseudocide and Lake Serpent Lore

Listen Here

In this episode, we’ll into two UFO reports from the last week of July around the southern tip of Seneca Lake. Video footage was shot of an orb over Burdett on the 25th, and on the 29th, the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department dispatched deputy to investigate anomalous light(s) moving from Watkins Glen and towards Reading.

Next up are a couple of stories of people who faked their own deaths on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake back in the mid-20th century. I’ll get into how they did it, why they did it, and how their scams were eventually discovered. We’ll examine the aftermath, and the unanswered questions, of these staged deaths.

Finally, we’ll look at a pair of classic tales from the Seneca Lake Monster legend. One story is fairly well-known in lake serpent lore, when two young men fired .38 caliber shots at a large, serpentine creature in the lake. The other story shines a light on the connection between the Seneca Lake Monster and one of the most influential and accomplished figures in the American medical field from the mid-nineteenth century.

Two July 2025 Reports: UFO Video Over Burdett, Sheriffs Follow Lights Near Watkins Glen

A pair of notable UFO sightings took place during the last week of July 2025 near Seneca Lake. The first sighting of a color- and shape-changing orb was recorded by a witness in Burdett on Friday the 25th at 10:14pm, while the second sighting prompted a call to the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Department, who apparently followed the object(s) from Watkins Glen towards Reading on Tuesday the 29th around 4:00am.

Burdett Sighting – July 25, 2025 – 10:14pm

The first July sighting was reported by an anonymous witness to Enigma Labs, an app (and website) where UFO witnesses can submit reports and stories, and users can receive real-time alerts.

According to the witness:

Just got home in our driveway. We saw a light moving in the sky. I grabbed my phone to video. I didnt realize till I was reviewing the video it looked like it was rotating changing shape and colors. My wife was also present

In the 23-second video below, the object first appears whitish-blue as it moves steadily across the sky. The object then appears to change shape, becoming larger while appearing to be rotating and changing shape. The light then seems to grow smaller while continuing to change color with shades of blue, purple, and pink, before disappearing behind the rooftop of a nearby house.

Here is the original video posted to Enigma Labs:

Here is the same video zoomed in:

Of course, orbs have been seen in the skies over and around Seneca Lake for the last 70 years, so another sighting in 2025, while rare, certainly isn’t unusual for the region.

Watkins Glen/Reading Sighting – July 29, 2025 – 4:00am

On July 30th, a Facebook user posted the following in a local Facebook group:

Anyone have any info on a possible UFO sighting at 4am on Ellison road outside of Watkins Glen in early morning 7-29-25? Sheriff was dispatched to check it out.

After another person asked for more information, the user provided the following clarification:

I was told by somebody that they heard it on the scanner as deputies were dispatched to check it out. Apparently they followed a light or lights north towards Reading. I was hoping to hear more info. That why I put it out there. I like to hear from whoever called it in a 4am.

Several commenters replied and confirmed they had heard the same report on the scanner, with one person stating that the responding deputy “asked dispatch to repeat the message.” Another user, from Watkins Glen, stated “I’ve (seen) many since December 2024.”

Although there is no other information on this report, and it quite possibly could have a prosaic explanation (drone, meteor), it’s worth noting that this specific area, along the southwest side of Seneca Lake, has seen many UFO reports over the years, particularly during the 1968 UFO flap. One sighting in ’68 took place very close to Ellison Road, site of the July 29th report:

December 12, 1968 – Reading, NY, approx. 5:30 p.m.

A fuel and feed business operator from Dundee was driving a delivery truck south on Van Dyke Road in Reading, heading towards Mud Lake Road, around 5:30 p.m. The man saw something in the distance that he thought at first to be an airplane. He then realized that the object had no red or green wing lights that a plane would have. It was a brilliant, constant, circular light he described as “mammoth.” The strange light, which the witness believed was around 6 by 8 feet, was moving from the west to the east and traveling roughly along the same path as County Line Road. The man watched the object for several minutes as he drove approximately 2 miles when it suddenly vanished. According to the witness,

“As though it became aware it was being watched, it shut off. It didn’t fade or fly away behind clouds. It shut off like someone flipped a switch. But first, it shot down a flat beam of light towards the ground.”

The next day, Barbara Bell, a reporter from the Ithaca Times, interviewed the witness about the Van Dyke Road sighting. After asking around the neighborhood of County Line Road to see if anyone else saw the same object, Bell found a second witness. A fifteen year old boy was driving a tractor in a field nearby when he saw an extremely bright cluster of lights in the sky. He started towards the farm owner’s home to alert them, but the lights “turned off suddenly.” The entire sighting lasted ten seconds. Neither witness knew about the other until Bell investigated and wrote about the incident in the evening paper.

If anyone has any information about these recent sightings, or if you have seen any unusual or explained objects in the skies near Seneca Lake, I’d love to hear from you! Call 607-307-1167 to leave a voicemail, or email podcast@senecalakemysteries.com.

E11 Bolton’s Bizarre Baptisms, Burnt Hill UFO Chase and Creekside Bigfoot

Listen Here

In this episode, we explore the extraordinary life of Dresden, NY native Bolton Coit Brown. An accomplished artist, painter, lithographer and mountaineer of the late 1800s and early 1900s, Bolton spent his childhood exploring the woods and streams near Seneca Lake. Did his strange youthful rituals in the waters of Seneca Lake inspire or influence him to live a life of consequence and leave a legacy that includes a mountain named after him?

Next, we’ll go back to a summer evening in 2011 when Eileen was traveling near Burnt Hill and the Finger Lakes National Forest and encountered a brightly glowing orb floating motionless about 100 feet up in the night sky. When the orb began to move, she followed it…and then things got weird. Soon, four other witnesses would watch the arrival of multiple aerial lights in the sky. Utilizing several internet sources, along with an interview I conducted with the primary witness several years ago with me, I’ve compiled a narrative of the entire high strangeness event in the witnesses’ own words.

Finally, we look at a rare Bigfoot report from the Seneca Lake area in 1962. A fisherman realizes he’s being observed by large, hulking creature covered in black fur and standing around 8 feet tall on the banks of Catherine Creek not far from Montour Falls. The witness recalls some intriguing details of the sighting, which was first reported on Episode 155 of the Bigfoot: Terror in the Woods podcast.

E10 Rediscovering Sacred Sites at the Alpine Portal w/Rick from Alpine

Listen Here

In early July 2025, I visited Connecticut Hill, also called the Alpine Portal, with my guide, Rick. Rick has spent the last 15-20 years hunting on Connecticut Hill, which is widely known for mysterious phenomena like UFOs, hauntings, cryptid sightings, anomalous weather and more. Our goal was to find a possible native stone pile Rick had previously photographed.

Though we didn’t find that stone pile, we stumbled upon something far more intriguing.

Join me and Rick as we discuss our visit to Connecticut Hill and our surprising discovery (or, more accurately, rediscovery) we made there. And after the conversation, stick around as I go even further in-depth with the details on what we found in a remote, steep ravine off-trail at the Alpine Portal.
