Round Mystery Craters Found At Bottom of Seneca Lake

In March 2025, the results of the The Seneca Lake Archaeological and Bathymetric Survey Project were published. Using state of the art underwater equipment, the project aimed to capture images of canal shipwrecks, and to create a detailed topographic map of the lake’s bottom.

The project documented 44 wrecks, but the most unexpected discovery was a field of nearly 70 indentations or “pockmarks,” each roughly 30ft deep and 400ft wide, on the bottom of Seneca Lake.

Scientists believe this may indicate underlying gas fields thousands of feet below the lake and will be further studying the mysterious pockmarks, but for now, these recently uncovered deep water formations are truly a mystery.
